Asthma is one of the most common diseases in the world. Understanding what might trigger an asthma attack helps asthma sufferers keep their disease in check such as avoiding dust, smoke, and other industrial emissions. In Chekka, north of Lebanon, however, the air outside people’s homes is filled with asthma triggers. In that region, air pollution from factories and power plants is a major cause of asthma attacks.
Greenarea conducted several interviews with asthma patients living in Chekka to investigate more about their asthma experience in this polluted area. One of the most important realizations is that Chekka’s population is exposed to high levels of air pollution, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, ozone, and high humidity, which are all known to trigger asthma. It is to note that asthma symptoms are greatly increased during periods of heavy air pollution.
