27 November 2015: The Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has approved its first methodology aimed at incentivizing emission reductions in the aviation sector. The methodology, titled ‘AM0116: Electric taxiing systems for airplanes,’ was developed jointly by the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and entails installing electric motors to the landing gear of aircraft to reduce emissions as airplanes maneuver around runways.
The CDM Board approved the methodology at its 87th meeting, which took place from 23-27 November 2015, in Paris, France. The Board requested the Methodologies Panel to explore how the methodology could be expanded to cover non-commercial aircraft.
At the meeting, the Board also approved revisions to approved methodologies and tools, including on primary district heating systems and waste energy recovery. It approved the revision of the standard ‘Demonstration of additionality, development of eligibility criteria and application of multiple methodologies for programmes of activities (PoA),’ in order to provide more flexibility to combine large-scale methodologies for PoA applications. The Board also approved the top-down standardized ‘Baseline woody biomass consumption for household cookstoves in Burundi.’
The Board also adopted its two-year business plan for 2016-2017 and management plan (MAP) for 2016.
