The ongoing waste crisis in Lebanon is getting worse by the day, and the Lebanese have been breathing polluted air, with no appropriate solution for the crisis yet. In the past few weeks however, the smell of garbage was worsening, and most of the Lebanese have been complaining about it. Apart from garbage, mosquitoes are invading every street and home in Lebanon since a couple of days. The Lebanese showed their anger over this matter on social media, and posted pictures and statuses of garbage.
On Saturday afternoon, a group of Nehmeh youth groups staged a sit-in on at the town’s square, to protest against the “unpleasant odors and toxins emitted from the waste transported to Nehmeh landfill,” and attempted to cut-off the road leading to it.
Speaking on behalf of the “Closing Nehmeh Landfill” Campaign, Charmaine Mohamad Mezher said: “It is a huge calamity when people are afflicted with an ignorant authority in charge of their affairs, accumulating remnants of their corruption by a death project targeting members of their own skin.”
“Unfortunately, our region has always been the weakest link and the reasons are well-known,” she went on, adding that “the political and internal pressures were able to impose themselves on the people, deluding them into thinking that re-opening the landfill is the solution.”
“We have had enough of your landfill poison and your wastes, and the bitterness of your tyranny and corruption,” Mezher concluded.
On the other hand, the National News Agency (NNA) reported that “Nehmeh citizens re-opened the road leading to the landfill entrance, allowing trucks transporting waste from Beirut to go through, following extended negotiations with the concerned authorities and security forces, whereby residents were promised that no trucks would access the town’s center but rather remain on the highway, and would be covered up.
But what should the Lebanese do bad smells due to garbage everywhere? Chief Executive of Cedar Environmental Ziad Abi Chaker posted on Facebook what he sees as a solution for that problem. He posted “In regards to the bad smells in Beirut and suburbs, these are due to the removal of the 7 to 8 months old waste which has undergone advanced anaerobic fermentation and has a very putrid smell…we will have to live with this situation until all the old waste by Beirut River and Karantina are removed. There is practically nothing we can do for the smell but we can protect ourselves and homes from the bacteria present in the air”.
Mr. Abi Chaket explained that “there is no need to buy the expensive antiseptics that some companies are pushing on the market now to make a quick buck…The mouthwash solution will be more effective and it should give a nice smell while it lasts…”
On another note, Abu Chaker posted: “if you or your kids are bitten by the flies, not all are mosquitoes, some of these flies are specific to anaerobic fermentation processes, you can put some mouthwash on a cotton and dab the bite area with it…it will alleviate the burning and automatically cleanse the bite wound from infection”.

Get Rid of Mosquitoes Naturally
Natural ways to get rid of mosquitoes may be soybean oil. In a study by the New England Journal of Medicine, a soybean oil-based repellent offered protection from mosquito bites for 1.5 hours.
Other studies have shown that decreasing the amount of perfume one uses might drive mosquitoes away. The same goes for perfumed soaps and shampoos.
Lavender is loved by humans all over the world, but mosquitoes hate it! To keep mosquitoes out of your home, add a drop of lavender to ribbon and place around open windows. The mosquitoes will certainly think twice about entering!
Eat more garlic, because after eating lots of garlic, garlic oil is gently released from your pores. This garlic oil acts almost like a barrier between your skin and the mosquitoes.
