The 90 hour trip — the world’s first solo transatlantic crossing in a solar-power aircraft — is the last big stretch of ocean Solae Impulse 2 will cross during its odyssey.

Pilot Bertrand Piccard lifted off from New York at 2:30 a.m. local time (6:30 a.m. UTC). The journey over the Atlantic is the longest distance Solar Impulse 2 will fly this year.

The epic, history-making voyage began in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, in March 2015, and the solar-powered craft and two pilots have made stops in Oman, Myanmar, China, Japan and various points in the US since then.
