Noise pollution is more destructive than you think it is. Humans are affected by it negatively, and so are other living beings on Earth. Perhaps, the most affected living beings by this “disturbing” phenomenon are marine organisms, and marine life in general.

Knowing that marine organisms rely on sound to communicate with each other, and to understand their surroundings, it is now becoming so difficult for the beautiful creature down there to hear the sounds of the ocean- something they rely on to live.

The reason?…. Let us imagine where all noise coming from industrial and military work will end; in the ocean.

Solution?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released a first of its kind roadmap for researching and managing the impact of ocean noise on marine life. Although the research focused on endangered whales, marine ecologists said that it could affect a larger variety of marine organisms.

The new strategy by NOAA, which is still a draft, and has not formally been adopted, calls for better protection of the natural soundscape within National Marine Sanctuaries, better use of NOAA’s resources to monitor noise pollution in US waters, better enforcement of marine mammal and endangered species regulations, and the promotion of quieter technologies.

However, the last item is really key to this plan’s success, and might just have the side effect of promoting more sustainable, greener technologies.

Previous steps taken by NOAA to mitigate the effects of noise pollution include stopping activities causing noise pollution for a few moments, when whales were spotted near work sites.

What can we do to stop noise pollution?

  • Make sure that factories are away from residential areas or oceans, where marine life is rich and could be affected severely. After all, what oxygen is to humans, sound is to marine organisms, since they rely on it to live. This is what they were given to communicate together. So, let’s save the beautiful marine life.
