Snapchat is known for letting users share real-time events with their friends and followers for a limited amount of time.
Photos and videos really don’t last that long on Snapchat as the app always deletes them after a given time.
The knowledge that they won’t be permanently posted on their profiles gives users freedom to share as many photos, videos and messages as they want.
However, Snapchat is now rolling out an update with a new feature called Memories, which actually does the opposite of what Snapchat is known for.
“Memories is a new way to save Snaps and Stories on Snapchat. It’s a personal collection of your favorite moments that lives below the Camera screen,” the company said on its official blog. “You can use Memories to create new Stories from Snaps you’ve taken, or even combine different Stories into a longer narrative! It’s fun to celebrate an anniversary or birthday by finding a new few old Snaps and stringing them together into a new Story.”
To save a snap or Story, users will have to tap the new save button on the lower left-hand side of the screen before sharing it with their friends.
To browse saved snaps and Stories, users will simply have to swipe up from the Camera to open the new Memories section. Rectangular posts are individual snaps, while circular posts are Stories, according to The Verge.
Memories also has a search function to make it easier to find a specific snap based on time and the location where it was taken.
If users want to do a more specific search, Snapchat has also included an object recognition search. This means that users can type the word “sunset,” and it will bring up snaps and Stories featuring a sunset.
This is the first time that Snapchat users will be able to save snaps and Stories within the app itself.
Snapchat assured users that their privacy concerns have already been addressed even before the release of the new update.
Snapchat’s Memories will allow users to flag a snap as My Eyes Only, according to Engadget.
If a snap or Story is flagged as My Eyes Only, it can only be viewed by the user.
In terms of where Memories are stored, it is backed up by Snapchat itself.
“We won’t backup any photos or videos from your Camera roll, unless you use one to make a new Story or add it to My Eyes Only. In that case, we’ll back up only the photo or video that you used,” Snapchat said.
Snapchat said that Memories is currently being rolled out “selectively” so users should expect it to be available over the next month.
Users will also receive a Chat from Team Snapchat informing them when Memories becomes available.
