Apples with blemishes save the environment, or at least, this is what the largest grocery store in the world is trying to say. “Walmart” is fighting food waste in its own good way, and perhaps, we could learn from this.
If you buy from Walmart, you will notice a big difference this week. Ugly apples and potatoes will be the talk of the town, instead of beautiful, shiny ones. The store is partnering with a brand of apples from Washington state, called “I’m Perfect”.
According to Walmart blog, “One of the challenges growers have is that Mother Nature can throw a curveball such as a hailstorm, high winds or even a string of very hot sunny days, which can damage the exterior finish of fruits,” adding “While the texture and flavor remain perfect, the exterior damage usually renders these fruits unsellable in the fresh market because they fail to meet traditional grade standards. We’re proud to be the first retailer to bring these apples to you”.
How and where will you find these apples?
- You can find the apples with blemishes in about 300 stores in Florida
- They will be available in 12 varieties from Granny Smith to Red Delicious
- The apples will be first offered in five-pound bags
According to Walmart, “The “I’m Perfect” product is just one example of the ways we are aiming to reduce food waste, supporting growers, and providing value to our customers”.
For sure, we all can can find such apples in our local grocery stores, so why don’t we try buying them, and contribute in reducing food waste?
