The Canadian group Enbridge will pay $ 177 million (231 million) in compensation for oil spills occurred on oil pipelines in 2010 in the US states of Michigan and Illinois, announced the Department of Justice (DoJ) on Wednesday the 20th of July 2016.

This agreement, concluded between the DoJ, the Federal Protection Agency US Environmental (EPA) and Enbridge breaks down into $ 110 million (CAN $ 143 million) to be used by the group to strengthen its measures of prevention leaks. Just over $ 60 million (C $ 78 million) are under fine for violations of laws on environmental protection.

Enbridge has already paid to the US authorities nearly 60 million ($ 78 million Cdn) for cleaning fees after these leaks and himself spent more than $ 1 billion for these operations.

 We accept the fines and measures to improve safety  journals in the decision   , said Enbridge in a statement. Such measures  have been widely implemented the last six years   , said the same source.

Enbridge operates in the Great Lakes region on the border between the United States and Canada, a network of over 3,000 kilometers of pipeline, carrying the equivalent of 1.7 million barrels per day to the United States from the Canadian deposits. Under the agreement, the Canadian group will also replace this network nearly 500 kilometers of pipelines to be defective.
