The Forestry Commission of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) elected at the end of its 23rd session at UN headquarters in Rome, the Lebanese Agriculture Minister Akram Chehayeb, President of the 24th session of the Forestry Commission for two years.
Chehayeb delivered a speech in which he thanked Near East countries for naming him as a candidate and other countries for electing him. He called for action in the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that accentuates the role of forests in combating desertification and reducing land degradation as well as preserving biodiversity and securing food resources to rural communities.
The director-general of FAO José Graziano da Silva, for his part, expressed his pleasure for electing Chehayeb and his confidence in the latter success.
