We have always known that biting nails harms our health. Next time, someone yells at you to keep your nails away from your mouth, and stop biting them, you can tell them about one of the “weirdest” studies that has found out that was has always been called “a bad habit”, has this one health benefit. A very important one even.
According to a new study published in Pediatrics, kids who nibbled their nails were less likely to get allergies and had stronger immune systems overall. Nail biting allowed bacteria and pollen trapped under the kids’ fingernails to get into their mouths, boosting their immunity. Basically, dirty fingernail chewing worked a little like an all-natural (and slightly icky) vaccine.
Malcolm Sears, Ph.D., a professor of medicine at McMaster University in Australia, lead researcher said in a press release: “Our findings are consistent with the hygiene theory that early exposure to dirt or germs reduces the risk of developing allergies,” adding “While we don’t recommend that these habits should be encouraged, there does appear to be a positive side to these habits.”
So, biting your nails, is good for your immune system, but we are not encouraging that. There are many other ways you can strengthen your immune system, and here are some of them:
Exercise and have a healthy diet
Stress Less
