The police force that spent weeks looking for a missing lynx are now searching for an even bigger cat after a lorry driver claimed he spotted – a lion.
Officers in Devon and Cornwall say they have carried out a search for a female lion after a trucker said one jumped out in front of his vehicle.
Police officers who went to look for the animal even found giant paw prints.
The big cat was spotted near a clay pit between Nanpean and Whitemoor in St Austell, Cornwall.
Police from the force have already spent weeks helping to trap an escaped lynx that went missing from Dartmoor Zoo in Devon and was recaptured at the weekend.
The stunned driver reported seeing a big cat with black markings on its face, a thorny colour, and a dark tail.
When the police arrived at the scene they found mysterious white paw prints where the creature had crossed the road.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “It was described as a female lion walking in front of a lorry. Officers went and spoke to the driver who had seen it.
“There were marks where the animal crossed. There have been reports of a similar nature over the years. There was no sighting of the animal by officers.
“It is not thought to be a danger to members of the public or workers.”
Dartmoor Zoo’s missing wild cat Flaviu was finally caught after three weeks on the run.
