A tornado watch has been issued for Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County.
Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes.
The national weather agency says there is indication from doppler radar that a severe thunderstorm five kilometres east of Irish Cove is producing rotation.
They say the storm is moving east at about 25 kilometres an hour.
