More than 120 people and 19 families already see the direct fruits of the project “Community Gardens family as a means of food security for the community of Source Jean Jacques”, led by Industrial civil engineer from the University of Chile, Trinidad Cadiz and other Chileans through the Foundation House of the Lord.
The project has the support of Chile Fund Against Hunger and Poverty, a joint initiative of the Government of Chile represented by the Chilean Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AGCID) and the United Nations Program for Development (UNDP Chile ), it is located in the rural area south of the town of Aquin, in the hamlet live about 500 families whose members are mostly children, all with very low levels of literacy.
The initiative addresses four areas of work include retrieve and keep feeding water from a spring to a cistern of accumulation; the establishment of management systems rainwater for domestic use and management measures that allow minimize the destructive effects of surface water that runs off landeroded; drilling new wells; performing a series of steps whose final goal is to provide residents of thecommunity of resources and knowledge to create and maintain home gardens.
According to the indicated Trinidad Cadiz, “the orchards provide the inhabitants of highly nutritious fruit to supplement a poor diet and eventually become a source of income for the family.”
In the preparation of home gardens participated experienced agronomists who evaluated the field and trained and supported on the spot to beneficiaries to select varieties to plant, prepare soil, compost , build tables nursery, and install the demarcation fences , among other activities.
“Other 39 families have started preparing a compost at home, the first step in a process that continues with the selection of seeds who want to plant in their nursery and germination of the seed bed, culminating with fencing and preparation land of his garden and transplant seedlings from their “says Cadiz.
The support provided by the Foundation House of the Lord ends in November and “the perception of community leaders is that their life has changed. Have water in abundance, vegetables at home and see that other people want to come and live in Source Jean Jacques, even the value of the land has begun to rise , “concludes the expert.
