A large stretch of sewage pollution in the River Trent has killed more than 15,000 fish – according to official estimates.

The Environment Agency responded to the incident, between Hanford and Trentham Monkey Forest, yesterday after members of the public contacted them about dead fish in the water.

The incident is still being investigated – although the source of the pollution is now reported to have been stopped.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “We are currently dealing with a large stretch of sewage pollution along the River Trent between Hanford in Stoke-on-Trent and the Monkey Forest in Trentham.
