Construction of electric fences around Russia’s Arctic settlements will help protect humans from polar bears, Russia’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Sergey Donskoy told TASS.
“To avoid such situations it is necessary to build electric fences around settlements so that the animals and humans just don’t have a chance to meet,” Donskoy said when asked about the security measures needed to be taken to protect humans from polar bears.
In early September around ten polar bears besieged a Russian Arctic weather station on the Troynoy island in the southern Kara sea. The station’s personnel were unable to leave the building while they had run out of flares to scare the predators away.
“The situation at the weather station has normalized by now. On September 14, the Akademik Treshnikov expedition vessel arrived at the island, all the polar bears were frightened away by a helicopter, additional flares to keep the predators away were delivered,” Donskoy said.
