Mogalla has not only doubled the acreage in its farms in Seville, Badajoz and Huelva, going from 100 hectares in the 2015 campaign to the current 250, but has also introduced new and earlier varieties.
The fruit and vegetable company currently has 250 hectares devoted to the production of pomegranates. Daniel Blanco, commercial director of Mogalla, stated that with this important investment “we hope to reach a production of 8,000 tonnes during the 2018/2019 campaign, with varieties such as the Mollar Elche, Wonderful, Acco and Smith.”
The main goal, he adds, “is to supply this fruit to our customers from late August to February and March,” as “we have observed an increase in the product’s demand year after year. The product also keeps for longer in the supermarket shelves and this undoubtedly helps in boosting the consumption.”
Furthermore, he noted that “pomegranates are known for their many properties (as a source of antioxidants, anti-aging effects, prevention of some types of cancer, diuretic, rich in vitamins, etc.), which is resulting in an increase in demand for this product.”
As regards the current campaign, the commercial director of Mogalla expects the production to oscillate between 3,000 and 3,500 tonnes. Of these, “about 1,000 tonnes will be of the variety Wonderful, while the rest will be Mollar Elche. Next year we also hope to have some Acco and Smith, with which we will start marketing in early September.”
The main destinations for production are Portugal, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany and the Nordic countries.
