University of Al-Manar – Rashid Karami institution of higher learning organized in Tripoli, in collaboration with the Italian University, Genoa, an Energy Conference titled “Energy management as a tool to achieve sustainable development”.
The conference held at the university campus in Abi Samra, Tripoli, was attended by Environment Minister Mohammad Mashnouq, rector and former Minister, Sami Minqara, and Italy’s ambassador to Lebanon, Massimo Marutti.
In his word, Ambassador Marutti said “The increasing population and the wrong use of environmental resources result in many environmental problems, most notably climate change and global warming. Many agreements have been signed in this regard. The problems in Lebanon are serious and they are exacerbated by the absence of plans to protect the citizens and access to a sound environment.”
He asked for plans to be set at the State level, and highlighted the importance of taking advantage of Lebanon’s geographic reality in the production of alternative energy such as solar and water energy.
The Ambassador also tackled the many obstacles “that we face and the appropriate laws that can be drafted to reach sustainable energy in Lebanon,” highlighting the important role played by municipality at this level.
“We are seeking to activate cooperation with Al-Manar University on this matter, and we are in the process of preparing project proposals to be carried out in partnership with the Lebanese and European municipalities – and the Mediterranean countries, as well as our partner Al-Manar University. We will focus on the subject of alternative energy since it is a priority in the ENI CBCMED program,” he concluded.
