To facilitate the administration of drugs to treat diabetes and reduce the number of meals a day there are new combination drugs that lower glucose levels in the blood, lower blood pressure and help you lose calories.
It is a combination of metformin which is a basis for people with diabetes and canagliflozin drug having an action mechanism which discards glucose through the urine, thereby sugar is reduced in the blood, said Dr. Fernando Lavalle Gonzalez, an endocrinologist and specialist in diabetes and obesity at the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon.
He explained that among the qualities of the drug is to help reduce calories and blood pressure so it is ideal for a person who has diabetes and has always wanted to lose weight but struggles for treatment. In this case the doctor may prescribe this treatment, which will help you start losing body mass and encourage better follow the diet; however, this does not mean that it is a drug to reduce size and must always be accompanied by a balanced diet and exercise.
These benefits are achieved due to canagliflozin called an inhibitor co-transporter sodium and glucose type 2 (SGLT2), which performs an action mechanism through the kidneys and small intestine, but not in the pancreas, this glucose levels in the blood are reduced, body weight and blood pressure.
Usually people with diabetes taking metformin, who over the years could lose their effectiveness and require another drug to reduce glucose Lavalle González explained.
In this sense, the therapy reduces to two the number of pills taken daily and promotes adherence to treatment. “Most people have to take several medications, including more pills taken more likely it is that they forget some”.
This drug can be used in virtually any stage of diabetes. When metformin begins to fail or if the diagnosis is extremely high glucose, but those who already have multiple therapy could replace some.
The specialist Lavalle González explained that half of patients with diabetes have no symptoms before they arediagnosed and when they are discovered have very high levels of glucose. “This type of patient can start with combination therapy of two drugs, which helps return to normal levels.”
