Approximately 13 percent of the nearly 2 million square kilometers comprising the national territory are classified as protected areas, ie, surfaces or spaces of protection to safeguard natural values, where their original environments have not been significantly altered by activity the human being. They are determined by presidential decree and on them the nation exercises sovereignty and jurisdiction. “There is not only a lot of species of plants and animals that are unique in the world, they also inhabit approximately three million Mexicans who use the resources in them are in the Natural Protected Areas in the national territory” explains Dr. Alfredo Ortega Rubio, scholar at the Center for Biological Research of the Northwest (CIBNOR).

The environmental stresses that the above is vitally important to establish policies in the short, medium and long term to preserve protected reserves. Thus, in order to collaborate with officials and heads of government institutions, it organized the First International Congress of Natural Protected Areas, which will integrate academics, students, researchers, users of said territories and decision makers, so that the results have a direct impact on national environmental policies. Dr. Ortega Rubio, who is coordinator of Congress, states that to support the position of the authorities is required to develop applied research and focused on the issues of protection of natural areas, from the perspective of anthropology, social, ecological, biochemistry, among others. “The conservation of biodiversity is not a romantic concept, equestrianism.

Each species is unique, unique and unrepeatable. The extinction of a species is an irrevocable process, thereby opportunities for the generations that follow us are canceled, “reiterates the Mexican environmentalist and adds that human survival depends on preserving biodiversity. “The best tool so that is retained is the creation of protected natural areas, where biodiversity is concentrated and have a jurisdiction that is their own, as well as rules and regulations that separate them from the rest of the territory. Perhaps zika cure cancer or are in some of the species that inhabit our territory and if you do not protect’ll never know. ” As part of the program Conacyt Thematic Networks, the National Network of Protected Areas is organizing the international conference on 10 and 11 November in Mexico City. The meeting will bring together researchers at the highest level in Latin America and, according to its coordinator, the idea is that the representatives of each country’s share successes and scientific, social and legislative, to learn from all experiences.
