Under the Japan government’s program of promoting application of information and communication technologies to next-generation ITS (intelligent transportation system), Panasonic is responsible for developing V2P (vehicle to pedestrian) technology to prevent pedestrians from being hit by vehicles, the company’s technology director disclosed at an International Conference on Connected Car & Intelligent Transportation System at National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology in Taiwan on November 25.

The conference was jointly organized by the Taiwan government-sponsored Institute for Information Industry (III), Taiwan Telematics Industry Association and Intelligent Transportation Society of Taiwan.

The V2P technology is based on 700MHz wireless communication and precise positioning of locations of vehicles and pedestrians, with such information used to judge whether there will be dangers, the technology director said. Panasonic has developed a software solution to predict whether vehicles will collide with pedestrians based on their locations, and if collisions are possible, warning can be sent out 6.5 seconds earlier under normal satellite signals.

A representative for UTMS (universal traffic management systems) Society of Japan indicated that the possibility of collisions for ITS-equipped cars is 37% lower than that for cars not equipped with ITS based on traffic data in Japan during April-July 2016.

Vice president for government-sponsored Automotive Research & Testing Center indicated that future development of automobiles focuses on autonomous driving technology to improve safety, on telematics to enhance drivers’ safety and comfort, and on electric-powering to save energy.

Smart Network System Institute under III, in order to reduce traffic accidents, has cooperated with Toyota IT Development Center to develop telematics and autonomous driving technologies since June 2016.
