Mariinsky Theater prima donna Anna Netrebko has been nominated for the Grammy award in the Best Classical Solo Vocal Album.
She got the nomination for the album ‘Verismo’ (‘Realism’ in Italian), which she recorded in cooperation with the Britain-based conductor Antonio Pappano.
The album includes areas from ‘Adriana Lecouvreur’ by Francesco Cilea, ‘Pagliacci’ by Ruggero Leoncavallo, ‘AndreaChenier’ by Umberto Giordano, ‘Madama Butterfly’, ‘Turandot’, ‘Tosca’, and ‘Manon Lescaut’ by Giacomo Puccini, ‘Mefistofele’ by Arrigo Boito, ‘La Wally’ by Alfredo Catalani, and ‘La Gioconda’ by Amilcare Ponchielli.
The recording was done with the assistance of the choir and orchestra of the St Cecilia National Academy.
Also aspiring to the Golden Gramophone award in the same nomination are Magdalena Kozena of the Czech Republic (Monteverdi album), Sabine Devieilhe of France (Mozart: the Weber Sisters), Dorothea Roeschmann of Germany (Schumann & Berg), and Ian Bostridge of Britain (Shakespeare Songs).
Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons has been nominated in two categories at a time, the Best Engineered Album, Classical, and the Best Orchestral Field for ‘Shostakovich: Under Stalin’s Shadow – Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 & 9), which he recorded together with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
All in all, applications for nomination for the Grammy award embraced some 21,000 musical pieces performed in the period of October 1, 2015, through to September 30, 2016. As many as over 13,000 people took part in the voting for nominations in all the 84 categories.
The awarding ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on February 12, 2017.
