Under the title “Litani River People and one of the keys to its development,” the Society of the Southern Greens launched Saturday 27 May 2017 Book of conditions of tourist facilities on the Litani River from the town of Zawtar al-Arabiya, and an official delegation of the Assembly included the activists Abbas Baalbaki researcher in water management and treatment, Najeeb Saeed and Miss Rana Noureddine, handed over the first copy of the conditions book to the mayor and head of the National Campaign for the Protection of the Litani, Hassan Ezzeddine. The Greens will continue their tour of the municipalities overlooking the river and its basin in the coming days.
The Book of Conditions sets out the criteria that establishments are required to follow in construction and distance from the river to preserve and clean the river and its natural habitats, as well as how to deal with waste water and waste and the restrictions of planting any plant in its vicinity or introducing any kind of fish and poultry.
In addition to these standards, the book sets out the tasks and responsibilities of the municipalities concerned in the different regions to ensure that the previously stated conditions are met and implemented “so that municipalities can use them to grant them licenses or control over the parks.
The Green Southerners initiative is the first civil initiative to deal with the regulation of tourist facilities on the river, many of which do not comply with the environmental requirements of Law 444/2002, which expose the river and its visitors and public safety.
The General Assembly has repeatedly declared “its refusal to the fractures and the rolling barges on the river. The environmental prosecutor has demanded that the miners be prosecuted and demanded the implementation of the plan to clean the river, which was delayed decades after the lifting of all infringements and sewage networks and the discharge of laboratory waste from the river, mainly in the northern part of the river. In light of the fact that the Litani river is one of the most important rivers in the region and therefore its preservation and its importance on all economic, cultural and social levels is a moral and national obligation first and a second urgent environmental, social, economic and development need. A commitment to standards that preserves the elements and characteristics of the river ecosystem and its basin is a must for tourist facilities along the banks of the river.
