The Utah Department of Environmental Quality is warning people headed to Provo Bay of potential health risks posed by algal bloom.

Officials say the blooms are spreading north from their original location in Provo Bay and could reach the Jordan River in a few days.

A Utah County Health Department spokeswoman told the Salt Lake Tribune on Saturday that the sunshine and heat in the area are providing the bloom with perfect conditions for growth.

The department said in its press release on Friday that it is awaiting results from tests taken in June to determine whether there are harmful cyanotoxins in the blooms. People interested in swimming in the bay are recommended to stay away from dark green water or areas with heavy scum.
