Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. were among the least environment-friendly IT companies worldwide in terms of their use of renewable energy and harmful chemicals, a report by Greenpeace showed Tuesday.

The two South Korean electronics companies each scored a “D-” and a “D+” in overall grades for their environmental performance, the global non-governmental organization revealed in its 2017 Guidelines on electronics products.

Google Inc. of the United States, Japan’s Sony Corp. and Huawei Technologies Co. of China were also in the D category.

The report evaluated 17 major global manufacturers that produce smartphones, tablets and laptops, in terms of a range of areas, including energy, resources and chemicals.

Samsung, the world’s largest electronics parts maker, received a “D-” for the high usage of chemicals, while it scored a “D” in terms of improvement of energy efficiency through the increasing use of renewable energy and cutting gas emission. It also got the same mark for the use of recycled materials.

LG scored a “C-” for the use of eco-friendly resources, a “D” for energy efficiency and “D+” for use of chemicals, the report showed.

The Netherlands-based Fairphone ranked at the top of the list with an overall score of “B”. Apple Inc. placed second with a “B-” in the grade. HP Inc. and Dell Inc. trailed behind, followed by Lenovo and Microsoft Corp. Amazon.com Inc. and Oppo Electronics Corp. scored the lowest mark of “F”. (Yonhap)
