Dr. Issam Maalouf expressed his faith in the judicial system afterBeirut Investigative Judge George Rizk listened to the testimonies of four doctors in the investigation into the incident. “Ella is in my heart,” Maalouf said. Rizk adjourned the case due to the absence of the Tannous family attorney Shafik al-Turk, who had removed himself from the proceedings over a personal tragedy, the state-run National News Agency reported. Speaking to reporters outside the Justice Palace, Maalouf’s lawyer, Sakhr al-Hashem said, “Justice will take its course.” He told the press that several doctors were summoned to testify before the medical committee tasked with investigating the case. The committee is comprised of seven doctors. “We are compelled to continue till the end,” Hashem said, adding that his defendant had no intention of backing down. Maalouf was arrested in June after being accused of negligence in the case of the infant. He was granted a bail of LL100 million ($66,335). The doctor insists he did not misdiagnose the baby, a claim the Tannous family rejects. The Daily Star
