The Coordinator, of this NGO ” Ibrahim badamasi Kamara” upon concerns about the news in a series of newspaper publications of the deportation of waste from Lebanon to Sierra Leone, has sent a letter to the CEO of the British company, “Chinook Urban Mining”, Mr Ferras Zalt, demanding for a clarification from the waste disposal company situated in UK, upon these allegations about their alleged involvement in dumping waste from Lebanon into Sierra Leone.
Kamara reminded Zalt of “the terrible experiences of our people who have suffered not only from the outbreak of Ebola Epidemic but from companies that have taken advantage of the weak state of affair in Sierra Leone”.
Kamara pointed that “the tragedy faced by our people cannot be compounded by irresponsible actions of companies abroad that may ignite environmental disaster for the already impoverished and disease stricken people in Sierra Leone. Our request to provide information about your alleged involvement in dumping waste, in which there is high potential of toxic materials involved also reflect the views of Sierra Leoneans living in the United Kingdom, a matter that insult not only our people but the British Tax payers polity whose monies is being spent in curbing poverty and disease among our people”.
Kamara stated that “while awaiting clarification on your involvement, I must hasten to remind you of not only the environmental obligations involved but the possibility of serious legal consequences should this predatory enterprise as alleged is successful in Sierra Leone”, And added that “while engaging in thorough investigations of the alleged involvement of British and Dutch Companies, in concert with global environmental protection platforms including the British Home Office on this matter, I must hasten to state that our action demands a swift and open response”.
And he concluded in his letter, “We are demanding answers to be able to uncover a lot of concerns on these recent waste dumping allegations. Hence, it is our optimism that you will corporate with us in clarifying this matter as we endeavor to establish a precedent against the notion that Sierra Leone is a suitable dumping site for garbage collection companies in abroad”.
