Mythology remains vibrant with its symbols, that are beyond times and places, and its hints are timeless, forming a restless dispute between good and evil. Since the Sumerian legend of “Gilgamesh”, we still destroy the environment every day. Every day, we kill “Hambaba”, the guard of forests and reserves.
Who said that the myth is not related to where we have reached? The king fought “Gilgamesh”, the guard of cedars, because he wanted to reserve the forests, so the gods intervened and allowed “Gilgamesh” to kill the guard “Hambaba”. The gods, who used to symbolize evil, won over the environmentalist, so “Gilgamesh” won to legalize cutting trees and selling them. He allowed cutting not only cedars and pine trees, but also fir trees, which were used in making ships.
Since five thousand years, we are prisoners of power- gods, killing “Hambaba” every day, while “Gilgamesh” has improved his investments. Now he has crushes and sanders, and polluting industries. He is still destroying forests on various places on Earth and ruining the habitat of animals that are threatened of extinction. In the 21st century, “Gilgamesh” is still killing elephants and trafficking their tusks, along with draining the planet’s resources. He is now running the oil industry, and controlling the financial markets. Unfortunately, “Gilgamesh” is exploiting the poor countries and stealing their resources and riches.
In Lebanon, the land of myths, however, “Gilgamesh” is still the guard of corruption, making suspicious deals, reaching investing in garbage, after he sold the cedars’ wood since thousands of years. He is piling wealth through evil.
If the gods used to intervene in everything in the past, they have now took root in a system where each sect has a god protecting its sacred interests.
Poor “Hambaba” … he is killed every day since 5 thousand years.
