تشير الأكاديمية العلمية في الولايات المتحدة الى ان نهراً واحداً في البرازيل يحتوي على انواع من الاسماك يفوق عددها كافة الاعداد المتواجدة في كل انهر الولايات المتحدة.. ذكرت منظمة الاونكتاد في آخر تقرير لها ان البيرو تضم 25 الف نوع من انواع النباتات ثلثها تقريبا لا توجد في مكان اخر في العالم . فضلاً عن احتضانها لنحو 10 بالمئة من انواع الاسماك في العالم بجانب انواع من الحيوانات لا تتواجد الا في بيئتها .
في الاطار نفسه، ذكرت الاكاديمية العلمية ان هناك وحدات في البيرو تصل مساحتها إلى 10 كم مربع تحتوي على 300 نوع من الأشجار في الوقت الذي يوجد في كل شمالي الولايات المتحدة 700 نوعا من الأشجار. مع الاشارة الى امكان لحظ 43 نوع من النمل على شجرة واحدة في الغابة الاستوائية في البيرو ، وهو عدد أنواع النمل في الجزر البريطانية كافة.
