Detox diets are one of the most circulated topics between people nowadays, especially in this season. In the period between Spring and Summer, we all start thinking or even “worrying” about our “beach body”. We go for “light” choices when ordering food, or even hit the gym, and as soon as we hear that detox diets (which usually consist of fruits and vegetables made into smoothies), “are the solution”, as many of our friends might advise us, we start researching. Would a detox diet really make us lose those few kilograms we are struggling with? Is it the “go-to healthy option”?

“greenarea.info” conducted a phone interview with Clinical Dietitian Nicole Maftoum, who writes healthy food tips on her blog and Facebook page “EAT like Nicole”. We asked the dietitian who is “passionate” about food and life, about the best detox diet.

She replied: “I do not personally believe in detox diets if they only meant smoothies and juices, because they can only make you lose water”, adding that “the fruits and vegetables found in the detox diets do not contain all the nutrients that the body needs”.

So which diet should we follow? According to Maftoum, the best detox diet is the Paleo” diet, in which “we eat as our ancestors used to eat”.

Paleo” is a diet based on the types of foods presumed to have been eaten by early humans, mainly consisting of meat, fish, vegetables, and fruit and excluding dairy or cereal products and processed food.

In order to detox our body, Nicole also advises “drinking fruits and vegetables containing anti-oxidants, and eating 2 to 3 portions of fruits and vegetables per day”.

We also asked the dietitian about the ideal amount of time to stay on a detox, in which she replied: “It is ideal to stay on a detox from 1 month up to 2 months, in a balanced way of course”.

Fruits that have the highest amount of anti-oxidant, are Baobab and Matcha, which could be found in some specialty stores.

Whatever diet you choose to follow, do it in a balanced way, and keep it mind that we want these fats to melt, so try not to do for diets that make you lose water only.
