Destroying the environment in Nahr Ibrahim valley is ongoing since 2 years, despite the issuance of several official decisions to stop the works in Janna dam.
On the 31st of May 2016, activists in the “Observatory”, which belongs to “Lebanon Eco Movement”, were able to shoot an aerial view of the dredging works in the valley, which aim at establishing a dam.
According to the environmental impact assessment of Janna Dam, around 400 types of plants in the valley, 739 types of invertebrates, 6 types of amphibians, 32 types of mammals, and 140 types of birds, will be under different levels of danger.
It was also revealed that five natural habitats, that are of high ecological importance, would be affected negatively as a result of the establishment of the project. Vast areas of forest trees (estimated at about 480,000 square meters) will also be cut.
The group of experts confirms that it is not possible to take any mitigation measures to avoid the negative environmental impacts, or even take a redemptive action to counter the dam’s expected effects on Nahr Ibrahim valley. The Ministry of Environment has adopted this item from the environmental impact assessment.
