As a first step to tackle the British Capital’s toxic air, there will be extra Charge on London’s most polluting cars.
You will have to pay 10 British pounds if you own a polluting car in London.
The mayor of London Sadiq Khan has also announced the following proposals, to tackle air pollution in that beautiful city:
- bring the implementation of the central London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) forward by one year to 2019
- expanding the ULEZ beyond central London in 2020
- introducing a new Emissions Surcharge from 2017 for the most polluting vehicles entering central London – find out more
- giving TfL the go-ahead to start looking at a diesel scrappage scheme as part of a wider national scheme run by the government
- keeping Londoners better informed and alerted when pollution is at its worst
- making sure TfL leads by example by cleaning up its bus fleet and buying only hybrid or zero emission double-decker buses from 2018.
Khan said: “With nearly 10,000 people dying early every year in London due to exposure to air pollution, cleaning up London’s toxic air is now an issue of life and death.”
He added that “It is the 60th anniversary of the Clean Air Act of 1956, which was passed following the great London smogs of the 1950s. Today we face another pollution public health emergency in London and now it’s our turn to act.”
According to london.gov.uk, 9,416 Londoners die early every year due to air pollution.
The Guardian reported that the mayor of london launched a consultation on the proposals at Great Ormond Street hospital for children, whose chief executive, Dr Peter Steer, said: “The mayor’s drive to clean up the capital’s air is fantastic news for our patients and staff”, adding that “Children living in highly polluted areas are four times more likely to have reduced lung function in adulthood, yet improving air quality has been shown to halt and reverse this effect.”
Anna Jones, at Greenpeace, said: “Sadiq Khan is taking bold action to clean up after the car industry who have got away with polluting our cities for far too long.”
She added: “We now know that car-makers lied and cheated about their emissions and were allowed to sell cars that spew out way more toxic pollution than officially meant to. We now need the UK government to take their share of responsibility and force car-makers to clean up their act.”
