Ecolabel is a voluntary label of the European Union that helps identify products and services that have a reduced life cycle from extraction of raw materials to production, use and disposal environmental impact.
The European Commission has adopted new ecological criteria for computers and tablets, furniture and footwear, as reported on Wednesday the 17th of August in a statement, which noted that those manufacturers of these products who wish to include Ecolabel must comply with “strict requirements” environmental, social and safety.

Specifically, producers of computers have to consider energy efficiency and upgrade possibilities devices during the design and manufacturing process as well as the ease to remove, recover and recycle the resources of the device.
Moreover, furniture manufacturers will have to develop a life-cycle assessment and pay “special attention” to hazardous compounds and residues that can contribute to indoor air pollution.
In the case of footwear, the European Commission has highlighted that have been taken into account international standards regarding working conditions, which apply to the phases of assembly. The revision of the criteria, says Brussels, is valid for six years from the date of adoption.
“Thanks to transparent and ecological criteria, consumers can choose with awareness without compromising the quality of products,” stressed the Commissioner for the Environment, Karmenu Vella, who has also stressed that the Ecolabel recognizes manufacturers design products “durable” so that innovation is driven and saves resources.
