While most of central and eastern Ontario is preparing for the first potential snowfall of the season, York Region may avoid the mess entirely. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for many of the areas north, west and east of the region, including Simcoe County, Caledon and Peterborough.

In other parts of the province, snow should begin Thursday morning and could be mixed with rain in some areas, before ending overnight. About two to five centimetres of snow is expected to fall, though local amounts of five to 10 centimetres are possible over higher elevations, such as the Haliburton Highlands.

This snow will be caused by a low pressure system that is currently centred over Illinois. It will track toward Lake Erie tonight and close to Lake Ontario Thursday.

There is a risk of power outages due to brisk easterly winds potentially pushing some snow-covered tree limbs onto power lines. Snow-covered roads may also hamper commutes between affected municipalities and the Greater Toronto Area.
