Salaheddine Mezouar welcomed journalists and participants alike to Marrakech and to COP22, which he baptized as the “COP of Action.” Both the COP22 President and UNFCCC Executive Secretary hailed the great success of the entry into force of the Paris Agreement and announced that 100 parties have already joined, demonstrating real climate action. They also announced that the 1st meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA1) would take place at COP22 on November 15.
The COP22 President emphasized the importance of reaching tangible commitments from States and civil society during the 11-day climate change conference in the Ochre City particularly in the areas of climate finance and adaptation. Patricia Espinosa praised the strong working relationship between the UNFCCC and Moroccan teams in preparation for the COP in Marrakech and underscored the thousands of worldwide climate actions registered via the Non-State Actor Zone for Climate Action (NAZCA) portal available on the UNFCCC website.
“We’re changing the paradigm towards a low-carbon global economy that needs key climate finance flows to the most vulnerable countries, “said Salaheddine Mezouar.
