The Arabia Room of the Blue Zone of the COP22, arbitrated a discussion on « Deforestation and Carbon Emissions ». 

The meeting which took place in the presence of a panel of experts and international universities, with aim of giving governments, and indigenous peoples’ organisations, and other parties the means to monitor annual carbon emissions with efficiency and scale.

Speaking at the event, Melanie Kermarc, head of the project Woods Hole Research Centre, and head of processes for the reduction of emissions arising from the deforestation and degradation of forests (REDD) in the Republic of Congo, as outlined that it is necessary to improve living conditions of the local population and to optimise the actions to be taken against deforestation.

The speakers put the emphasis on the necessity to find new solutions for this problem, such as the promotion of sustainable agriculture, responsible and economic eco-responsibility, stating that it was imperative to include the local population in the process of forest management.

Participants also highlighted that the directors and world leaders needed to take action and make concrete decisions to protect indigenous peoples and and develop national resources in the most under-privileged regions.
