Egypt signed a USD 3.5-million (EUR 3.3m) grant agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support small-scale solar installations in the country.
The grant is provided by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), Egypt’s Ministry of International Cooperation said in a statement.
The project is aimed at supporting the adoption of small grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems, especially at private homes and government buildings. Its objectives also include creating technical jobs and increasing the local manufacturing component of such systems.
It is expected that the scheme will stimulate the installation of USD 30 million worth of solar systems during its five-year duration.
According to the announcement, the project is in line with Egypt’s wish to exploit its solar resources and increase renewable energy generation, as well as its commitment to contribute to reducing greenhouses emissions pursuant to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
