The first solar-powered abra in the Middle East has begun operations in the emirate.

The Roads and Transport Authority says the boat can travel for six hours at a speed of four knots per hour (7.4 kilometres an hour).

The abra is being used at Al Mamzar and was introduced to service after several trial runs.

A balance test was conducted by a specialist company during a one-month trial run at Al Jaddaf with no passengers on board.

The boat was converted from electric power after the installation of solar panels on the roof as well as other operational accessories, said the RTA.
