The cycle of sea turtles follows the coast of Lebanon, which has started to raise real concerns about these organisms, especially as they are a very important part of the marine ecosystems, and their disappearance or decline in numbers means that these systems are defective.
And with the finding of a dead turtle at Jiyeh Beach yesterday, more disturbing concerns are confirmed, so dozens of sea turtles have sailed the sea over the past two months, greenarea.info has monitored many, and continues with experts trying to determine the causes of their deaths, especially since this phenomenon was not limited. In addition, Italy is also facing this problem, and it has been confirmed so far that most cases of death are not caused by the swallowing of turtles to nylon bags and have not shown signs of trauma, which is likely to be satisfactory. It will only be clear through research and studies in order to stop the uncertainty about this phenomenon.
In this context, a green turtle was found on the coast of Al-Jiyeh by marine rescuers in the Lebanese Civil Defense in the context of their daily observation of the beach in this area.
The turtles’ issue remains a major care in Lebanon, and we can not forget the role of the civil defense in embracing the Turtle Lucky and care and responsibility the civil defense put in its rehabilitation process for more than ten months and which has improved over the past few days. Based on the first images it appears that the dead tortoise was decomposed, indicating that it has been dead on the shore for a long time. The civil defense demanded the Association ” Green Area International” to intervene with the follow-up and interest in monitoring turtles along Lebanese beach.
In this context, we informed the Center for Marine Sciences in Batroun. The Center sent researchers to the place to inspect the tortoise and to take the medical procedure in order to record the situation and find out the cause of the death.
The researchers were accompanied by the French activist Thierry Magniez, an environmental science instructor, photographer and director who has recently been active in environmental work by setting up exhibitions and pursuing scientific research, preparing basic materials for teachers and adopting them in classrooms, and he is among people working for the Muséu National d’histoires naturelles de Paris.
The researchers carried out the procedure of dissection and extraction of the necessary organs at the shore for the purpose of conducting the necessary medical analysis after transferring the turtle to the center. The researchers told greenarea.info that the dissection was done at the beach due to the bad status of the turtle as a result of decomposition, and confirmed that the tortoise is a huge Carita Caretta female, which is placed on the “Red List” and that “their numbers are low” based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The researchers found out that the cause of her death may have been due to a blow to her head, which led to the marginalization of her skull, in addition to the time she stayed dead on the shore led to the decomposition of many parts and helped in the emission of bad smells. The Researchers added that there was no plastic in her stomach.
Magniez took pictures of the tortoise, and we got some of them.
