A medical waste company, Euroteam, has been caught on camera dumping untreated dangerous hospital waste on a river bank in the Tirana outskirts, following an investigation by a television show.

A journalist for one of Albania’s investigative news shows was hit several times by a company manager and shareholder, Mirela Topulli, as the journalist confronted her about the waste dump.

Topulli is now wanted by police, facing criminal charges for hitting the journalist, while the company faces fines and removal of license for its illegal activity.

The company, Euroteam, holds contracts with several public and private hospitals to safely dispose of dangerous medical waste.

The investigative show, Stop on Klan TV, showed the company did not have the proper equipment to treat such waste and dumped it on the Erzen River banks instead.

People living in the area had complained to authorities; however, it was only after the television crew showed up that the proper authorities launched an investigation.

Albania’s riverbeds are some of Europe’s most polluted as they are routinely used as dumping grounds, causing environmental concerns of people living along the banks and the shoreline where the rivers deposit plastic waste.
