An environmental agency will be set up to protect environmental heritage, Minister Jose’ Herrera announced in Parliament this evening.
The agency, which will be known as Environment Malta, will be similar to Heritage Malta.
The ministry has also identified three areas of afforestation.
ERA has also received in excess of 1,900 planning applications.
The minister also unveiled plans to reduce noise pollution, and the introduction of an environmental court.
Throughout the debate there was consensus on both sides that local councils needed to be provided with the tools to assist the environment.
PN MP Karol Aquilina also highlighted the issues surrounding fish farms, and said that it should no longer exits.
Marlene Farrugia and Godfrey Farrugia also criticised the large scale development at the cost of the environment that is taking place in the country
