Spanish retailer Mercadona has expanded its presence in the country with the opening of one new store, and the reopening of four refurbished supermarkets, according to its ‘efficient’ store model.

In the past two weeks, a new supermarket has been opened in Burriana, while four existing stores have been reopened following refurbishments, located in Salamanca, Madrid, Asturias and Tenerife.

The investments needed for the refurbishments span from €1 million to €3 million.

Mercadona plans a further investment of €180 million in 2017, in order to refurbish 126 more stores across Spain.

Store Features

The new and refurbished stores feature an entrance with double glazing, a new meat counter, a central gondola for cosmetics, and a fresh orange juice machine. They also include expanded corridors for fruit and vegetables, in order to make the shopping experience more comfortable.

The company has worked on improving workers’ conditions as well, by providing new dining areas and personal lockers for staff.

At an environmental level, measures have been taken to reduce energy consumption by up to 40%, due to improvements in thermal and acoustic insulation, and optimisation of wall thickness. In addition, new LED lighting systems were installed for more efficient energy management.

Tablets have also been introduced for carrying out administration procedures, to replace paper and reduce waste.
