Qatar has stressed the importance of distancing education from political differences and ensuring that students continue their studies away from any considerations that may affect their career and ensure their rights based on international conventions, especially human rights.
This came in a statement delivered by Mohamed Ali al-Marri, a member of Qatar’s delegation participating in the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
He stressed the need to adhere to the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan as an integrated vision, calling on the international community to seize this opportunity to further implement the objectives of this ambitious plan and address obstacles to development, taking into account the priorities, needs and specificities of developing and least developed countries in particular.
Al-Marri said Qatar pays special attention to improving the level of education, providing everyone with access to a proper education and gaining experience, “based on our belief in the importance of investing in human resources.”
He reviewed Qatar’s successful experience in this field.
Qatar has been able to provide quality education to millions of children and young people in the world, particularly in conflict and natural disaster areas, through the programmes and projects of various Qatari educational institutions, Education Above All “aimed at protecting and promoting the right to education in conflict-affected areas, “Educate A Child (EAC)” initiative and the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE).
He stressed that sustainable development can not be achieved without the establishment of peaceful, non-marginalised societies, as affirmed by the 16th goal of sustainable development.
Accordingly, Qatar has played a leading role in establishing the Global Alliance to report progress in promoting societies that enjoy peace and justice for all, al-Marri added.
He said that “Qatar National Vision 2030 has identified key economic, social, human and environmental goals, and has placed development at the centre of its priorities with integrating Sustainable Development Plan 2030 into National Development Strategy 2017-2022 “.
Qatar’s human rights-based development approach, and the right of all individuals to participate and contribute to the economic, social and cultural development and to enjoy its benefits on the basis of equality and non-discrimination, was one way of advancing the goals of sustainable development, he added.
Al-Marri noted that the outstanding performance of Qatar in the field of human development has enabled it to be ranked the first in the Arab world, and 33rd globally in the field of human development, which confirms the high level of the country’s plans in the field of human development.
He said the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan is the result of the efforts of member states.
It is recognised that strengthening these efforts and moving forward with the goals and objectives of this plan imposes a responsibility on countries to promote education and ensure universal and equal access to education.
Good and equitable education for all was an important enabling element for sustainable development, al-Marri underlined.
